We are thrilled to share Elle Decor’s House Tour of one of our recent projects – a mid-century ranch remodel in the East Bay! Niche Interiors was tasked with reviving a classic 1950’s ranch home which fell victim to poor remodeling choices, including Doric columns in the living room (gasp)! Our goal was to create a modern take on a California ranch, infused with our client’s swanky ‘Mad Men’ aesthetic.

Since we all love the satisfaction in seeing major transformations we wanted to share the ‘Before’ photos of this special project! Looking at these photos we can almost forget the months of planning and construction details, or the hundreds of decisions made to get to the ‘After’.

The living room was in dire need of help – dated wall paneling, decorative columns, and a gaudy fireplace clashed with the clean-lined 1950’s architecture. We added custom walnut built-ins to flank the dramatic new slate fireplace.

The library received a dose of drama with black trim and crisp white paint. We removed the existing built-in bookcases which crowded the window and made the room feel smaller, instead opting for contemporary custom built-ins along the left wall. A pair of mustard velvet armchairs are grounded by a round navy rug.

Painting the beams and walls instantly refreshed the space, along with light wood floors, a contemporary fireplace, and new lighting. Generously scaled sofas ground the expansive living room, creating a cozy conversation area. Textural rugs and natural fabrics are layered with navy and persimmon accents.

Before: The room lacked depth, softness and warmth.  The generous space was sparsely filled with furniture on one end with a huge void at the foot of the bed.  This room was begging for a seating area!

After: A chocolate velvet upholstered bed anchors one side of the room and a pair of deep armchairs and ottoman create a cozy lounge area in front of the fireplace. Natural elements are introduced with textural grasscloth and capiz shell light fixtures.

Tranquil palette.  Our clients were drawn to warm, neutral spaces without much contrast. We kept the overall color palette to taupe, chocolate, ivory, and seafoam. A mix of velvet, subtle patterns, and natural fibers creates a soothing and sumptuous space to unwind. We introduced small doses of persimmon for an unexpected pop of vibrancy.  This warm hue can be found throughout the bedroom in pillows, flowers, and artwork.

With the new seating area our clients can’t seem to keep their boys out of here! We’re not entirely sure if this is a good or bad thing.  Either way, this room has received the stamp of approval from all family members. To us, that’s a job well done!
